The Telugu film industry gets united against service tax imposed by the Union Government. Several film personalities have staged a protest in front of Film Chamber on Monday against the levy of service tax on films.
They alleged that the 12.36 per cent service tax imposed by central government on various crafts has been affecting the film and television industry badly. They had earlier observed a protest on February 23, 2012, in protest against the government's proposal, which didn̢۪t deter the government and the new taxation came into effect on July 1, 2012.
MAA president Murali Mohan, APFCC president Tammareddy Bharadwaja, veteran producer D Ramanaidu and several others were present. Film and television shootings have been halted for the day. Also other industries like Kollywood, Sandalwood have raised their pitch against the service tax. The Tamil film industry is way ahead on Tollywood and it is on a fast protesting against their inclusion in the service tax.
The film personalities opined that the tax has increased the production costs heavily. The South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce, the Federation of Film Employees' Federation of South India (FEFSI) and the associations for television artistes have expressed their support to ongoing protests against service tax.
