After the failure of Raavanan, filmmaker Mani Ratnam has taken more than two years to mould his next master-piece, which features newcomers like Gautham Karthik and Thulasi Nair in the lead roles. His latest directorial venture has simultaneously been made and released in Telugu as Kadali and Tamil as Kadal.

Movie : Kadali

Music : A R Rahman
Producer: Mani Ratnam, Manohar Prasad

Story:
Thomas (Gautham) is a reckless boy who has no discipline and the reason for that is his childhood filled with troubles. But life changes for him with the arrival of Father Sam (Arvind Swamy) a Christian priest who gives him a sense of direction. There is Berchmans (Arjun) who is a notorious guy and he has a past issue with Sam. With his plan, he gets Sam into an issue and puts him in jail. Meanwhile, Thomas comes across Priya (Thulasi) and starts liking her but Sam’s absence again stirs his instincts and he joins Berchmans gang. What happens after that forms the rest of the story.

Performances:

Gautham Karthik also looks promising and impresses you in action and dance sequences. He has tried hard to prove his mettle in the first attempt. His chemistry with Thulasi is a treat.

Thulasi Nair has less scope in the film Kadali when compared to other three lead actors. She has also tried to do her best. She impresses you in song sequences.Thulasi Nair is weak in looks but good in  expressions

Aravind Swamy and Arjun had good amount of roles in the movie and their performances are brilliant. The actors have done their roles with such ease. Thambi Ramiah is convincing, Lakshmi Manchu is brief.

Lakshmi Manchu sizzled in special role while others did their roles to perfection.

Technical Aspects:

The director has come up with a very different storyline and while the presentation was grand, the narrative was a letdown.  The dialogues were alright. The script was weak and the screenplay was adequate. The background score was not that great and only two songs were worth listening.  Rajiv Menon's photography is absolutely top notch. His picturisation of beaches and sea is a visual treat.. Editing should have been crisp. Costumes were suiting the moods while the art department was royal.

Plus Points:

New comers Gautam, Tulasi and their performances
Arjun, Arvind swamy's stellar performances
AR Rahman's music
Rajiv Menon's cinematography
Screenplay

Minus Points:

Confusing story-line
Too trivial
Editing

Analysis:

Being the ace director Mani Ratnam’s film, Kadal is surrounded with huge expectations. Instead Kadal my not reach your hopes if you expect to watch the film on the range of Roja, Nayagan, Thalapathi, Bombay, Geethanjali et al. Kadal is all bout good vs bad and the central characters are essayed by Aravind Swamy and Arjun. In fact the two prominent stars got more screentime and importance than the debutant actors, where the love story is interwoven between these two prominent characters Sam and Bergman in the backdrop of sea.

The initial hour of the movie is excellent and the Thomas characterization as the innocent child was heart-wrenching, but as the story progresses Mani has shown the struggle between the good and bad. The story moves at a very slow pace and it’s only in the second half the love story takes off. Aravind Swamy has tried to pull off the film in the first half but the characterization lacks the needed depth and it isn’t convincing enough. While the narration holds your interest at times, the slow pace and the sloped screenplay frequently tests your patience.

Final Word:Kadali has brilliant performances and wonderful script, nice execution but weak feel, kills the interest among the viewers. But it should be watched at least once for the attempt of Mani Ratnam.
